Meg & Matt Enjoy Their Modern Wedding at the aVenue

Friday, August 5, 2011

Meg and Matt are a social duo of Nashville and wanted their wedding to represent their signature, couple style. Nashville Event Space helped them select aVenue for their wedding location as it blended the traditional aspects they sought with their appreciation for contemporary flair. Between their own personal touches sprinkled throughout the event and their vibrant colors, Meg and Matt's wedding created the perfect Nashville love affair. Luckily, Jonathon Campbell Photography was there to capture every moment of their special day.

How would you describe your style as a couple?

Modestly Modern & Lively

How did you incorporate that style into your wedding?

The aVenue was a mixture of an intimate, yet nontraditional setting that blended who we are as a social couple and the city of Nashville. We used vibrant contrasting colors (teal, chocolate and blush pink accents) with subtle personal touches in our details.

What was the favorite aspect of your wedding?

The event really portrayed us as a couple in this time in our lives together.

Where did you save/DIY?

We created our own programs, our parents made the guest "Welcome Bags," we had SIMPLE floral touches, and only served beer and wine at the reception.

Now that the wedding day is over, is there anything about your planning process you feel you could have done differently?

Try to make final decisions about the small details earlier in the process to lower the stress level nearer to the event.

What stood out about your wedding that represented your couple style?

We wanted to customize some items, but not too much and make it over the top cheesy. We had the cocktail stirrers with our initials, the logo for the light, and we used M&M candies for favors. The centerpieces were simple, yet elegant and added light to the room with candles. We are a very social and energetic couple, so the live band kept the energy up throughout the entire event.

Where did you splurge?

The band, the photographer, and the venue.

What made it "worth it"?

It was the perfect downtown location close to everything so our out of town guests could have the "Nashville Experience" while visiting. Also, it was all in one place, we didn't want people to have to drive from our church in Brentwood all the way to downtown and then having to try to park, getting lost on the way, etc.

In one sentence, what words of advice do you have for couples in the midst of their planning?

Talk things out; don’t assume the other person wants something without asking and it will save a lot of time having to change plans and mend hurt feelings.

Must Have Turquoise: An Eclectic Nashville Couple Weds at Houston Station

Friday, July 29, 2011

When Amanda was planning for her wedding to John, the interior designer in her knew she wanted a particular shade of turquoise as the accent to her more classic black and white color scheme. She had already found the perfect shoes for her bridesmaids and was on the quest to find the exact shade of blue for the guys' accessories. Thankfully Street Tuxedo came to the rescue, as did her other vendors who helped pull the look together for her eclectic, turquoise inspired wedding!

My Wedding Details

How would you describe your style as a couple?
That’s a tough question; maybe eclectic? As an interior designer, I love modern, contemporary style, pops of color amidst crisp neutral pallets and unique and developed details. John has a love for all things vintage, from clothes to furniture right down to our condo at Werthan Lofts which used to be a burlap bag factory at the turn of the century. Together we love to combine old and new, especially when we can repurpose something to give it a fresh look.

How did you incorporate that style into your wedding
When choosing a venue, it was important to us that the space had the right look and feel for everything else to fall into. We wanted it to stand alone and not need a lot of decoration to make it look good. Houston Station was the whole package: a large, open space, an urban backdrop and a familiar look (similar to where we live) that felt like us and is incredible by itself. We used a chandelier motif throughout the wedding, first seen on our invitations and carried out through lighted chandeliers in Houston Station. The black chandelier silhouette on the invitations fit well into the black, white, gray and turquoise, which are my favorite colors. I wanted the details throughout to reflect us as a couple.

One of my favorite details is our wedding poster. Designed by local graphic designer Amy McNeil, the poster looks similar to classic Nashville Hatch Prints that John and I collect at shows we attend at the Ryman. It was the perfect blend of our wedding theme and a vintage look to compliment Houston Station. Guests of the wedding signed the poster and we now have it framed in our condo. Another detail I loved was the coffee bar. John and I love coffee and so we had Scott with Notable Blends create a custom blend for our wedding, which our guests took home as favors. In between the ceremony and the reception instead of having a cocktail hour we treated our guests to a coffee hour where Scott made any coffee drink to order while people mingled and waited for the reception to begin.

The music was another area that I wanted to really reflect us as a couple. Our ceremony music started with John’s dad singing and playing guitar to a song he wrote for his own wedding and was followed by a series of songs that have a lot of meaning in our relationship and our relationships with people at the wedding (for instance, my bridesmaids walked down the aisle to “For Good” from Wicked and I walked down the aisle to Iron and Wine’s version of “Such Great Heights”, a song that always reminds me of John). The reception was loaded with our favorite 90’s music and the dancing didn’t stop until the reception ended. It was a reflection of our life together.

Did you end up over or under budget?
Right in budget, thanks to my fabulous wedding planner Emily Humphries of Simply Yours Weddings! Although it’s incredibly hard to stay in budget with Etsy.com in the picture now.

Were there any items/services that were gifted/discounted? How did you find those deals?
I attended the bridal show at the convention center and received a coupon for Street Tuxedo that allowed John to get his tux for free and give his groomsmen a discount on their tuxes. I have worked part time for Spangler Entertainment for several years and so of course I had to have them as my DJ. They are so worth the money for their DJs and services; I would have paid full price for them had I not had the employee discount ☺. I also happen to work with an owner of the GiGi’s cupcake of Murfreesboro, who gave me a great price on cupcakes for the wedding. She is also an interior designer (like myself) so it was fun to work out the colors and flavors of the cupcakes to compliment the rest of the design. I loved having cupcakes because people took the left over cupcakes home as favors (and they were delicious!).

Now that the wedding day is over, is there anything about your planning process you feel you could have done differently?
Overall, I felt a huge burden lifted by having a planner to take care of the details and coordination. If I could do anything differently, it would be to just take more time to relax. I felt stressed out, especially the last month leading up to the wedding, and it was mostly unnecessary.

In one sentence, what words of advice do you have for couples in the midst of their planning?
Make sure to spend (non-wedding related) time together relaxing and enjoying being engaged.

Fall in Love with Jamie + Andy: Their Charm, Their Details, Their Amazing DIY Nashville Wedding!

Friday, July 22, 2011

When you think of a downtown Nashville wedding, you would usually imagine the skyline lit up at night and maybe a church or funky venue along Broadway. But Jamie and Andy's had nothing of the downtown feel; instead the photos show a warm, intimate ceremony that appears to be in the countryside. With such a fun twist, we had to share! Especially since we also loved their engagement photos, which we featured back in February.

From all the photos, you will see that these two lovebirds are truly that – in love. And the snowy Loveless background of their engagement photos was the perfect pre-cursor to their vintage wedding. Jamie is a lover of anything vintage, with her own etsy shop (Owl Really) and she pulled the look together perfectly and subtly.

Andy and Jamie took a small budget and a larger guest list and combined it into a beautiful wedding. Their wedding shows that you can do much with little. It takes a lot of creativity, which luckily - Jamie has, some DIY, loving and giving friends, and you end up with a whole lot of fun. Every photo we have shows laughing, smiling faces. Enjoy the charm and nostalgia of weddings past…

How would you describe your style as a couple?

While Andy is not as obsessed with vintage style as I am, he can definitely appreciate the history and cool-factor of items made decades ago. He rocks suspenders and hats and his grandfather’s sports coat. I wear dresses daily and even though they’re not all vintage, I like to think I’m paying tribute to the generations before me that took care to dress up every day.

I am very frugal and love to thrift which I knew would bleed over to wedding planning, not only because it’s my way of life, but also because it felt wasteful to spend lavishly. Andy’s laidback attitude helped keep my head on straight while wedding planning and his catchphrase was, “It’s just a wedding.” That saying didn’t demean our wedding, but helped keep the focus on the MARRIAGE, not a few hours on a beautiful Saturday. (However, our wedding was gorgeous and simple and US and I loved every minute of it.)

downtown-nashville-wedding-wedding-party-barn

downtown-nashville-wedding-little-white-chapel

How did you incorporate that style into your wedding?

I thought about how weddings USED to be – they used to not be such a spectacle – and I wanted to go back to the “olden days.” It felt nostalgic to keep it basic and not include every single wedding tradition (like dollar dances or garter tosses, etc). In fact, we nixed practically all the wedding traditions: no unity candle, no first dance, no toasts, no bouquet toss… It was just us, our family & friends, and (hopefully) fun times.

Because we were doing our wedding on a budget, we had limited venue options especially since it was important to us to be married IN Nashville, not a suburb or the country. The chapel at the Hope Center was free because I’m a member of Midtown Fellowship which has the lease on that building. Happily, the chapel is quaint which was key when I thought about our wedding. I wanted it to be simple, charming, folksy, casual, handmade, and vintage.

We were so fortunate that our dream reception venue, the Anchor Fellowship, was quite affordable compared to other options – and SO flexible. It is naturally vintage – it was built in the 1850s and features worn hardwood floors and exposed brick walls along with vintage-style string lights that the church leaves hung all the time. The building evokes a very nostalgic feel, which I love about it.

I didn’t choose colors, which is mind-blowing to most people. As soon as you start planning a wedding, one of the first questions you hear is, “What are your colors?” I wanted it to look eclectic and wanted more of an “anthropologie” feel rather than a color scheme. We chose gray for our wedding party ensembles because we both love gray and I fell in love with a gray dress that seemed perfect for a bridesmaid dress. Other than that, I chose happy colors for the flowergirls (pink, teal, and yellow – I was not interested in making them mini-brides!) and used pink when I could (in the bridesmaid bouquets and shoes) but everything else was a free-for-all.

I thrifted all the plates that I used to make cake stands and the other elements of the centerpieces so I was at the liberty of whatever I could find. Everything turned out charming and vintage and eclectic. I loved it.

What was the favorite aspect of your wedding?

I loved being able to express our faith and our commitment to each other; in front of almost 200 people, we made a covenant with God in a fun and meaningful ceremony. It was a joyful ceremony and even our friends that don’t share our faith thought it was beautiful and heart-felt. Many people remarked that they had never cried at a wedding before ours!

In a tangible sense, I loved our succulent centerpieces. I researched buying succulents and found some decent options on ebay, but when I posted about it on Facebook, my mom's cousin Mary Beth told me that her mother-in-law (my great-aunt) had "hens and chicks" in her garden in Michigan. My great-aunt has been very sick and I knew she wouldn't be able to make it to Nashville for the wedding, so I was instantly intrigued by the idea of having plants from her garden at the wedding. In an amazing turn of events, the snow cleared in Michigan one weekend, Mary Beth was able to dig up about 50 hens and chicks and she brought them to Louisville a few weeks later to my bridal shower. My mom and I planted them in the various containers I had thrifted and I brought them back to Nashville to keep alive until the wedding!

We found out that the plants had actually originated in my great-grandmother's garden! Once we learned this, all the women in my family wanted to take some home after the wedding. It was perfect! I loved having that sense of family and history incorporated into the wedding and I'm so glad that SO many family members now get to enjoy these plants! I am keeping some potted but I am also going to plant some at our house.

Where did you splurge? Where did you save/DIY?

I don’t think I splurged on anything! My alterations ended up being as expensive as my dress, but since my dress was around $250, that wasn’t THAT bad. The beaded lace seemed pricey at about $50 but was SO worth it.

I DIYed almost everything. I planned the wedding from beginning to end with help from family and friends – it was definitely a community effort. I made my bouquet and bridesmaid bouquets (flowers were too expensive and I fell in love with the statement bouquets that Petal and Print makes, so I made my own!), my hairpiece, all the cake stands for the various desserts, and the flowergirl baskets. We even made our own photobooth with 10 yards of fabric that was given to me, borrowed professional lighting, and had an extra photographer manning the camera!

We also used items we already had. I wore shoes I already owned, I used a platter I already owned for the communion bread, I used knickknacks from home to decorate the reception space and I used a cute table I found on the side of the road years ago to hold our communion elements during the ceremony. I did zero decorations at the church minus the table and communion elements because I wanted the focus to be on the marriage, not on ornate flower arrangements or candelabras.

We borrowed items, like my veil and table runners. We had a lot of help from family and friends who gave us generous gifts (like our videography, our invitation design, our ceremony music, our reception music, and more). I bought tablecloths instead of renting them (it’s cheaper! And I’m selling them now!). We barely needed decorations since the reception space is so great. I used borrowed glass candle holders, the free and meaningful succulents in thrifted mugs and teacups, and knickknacks from my own home.

We saved on favors because we didn’t do them! We chose to donate to Thistle Farms in lieu of favors which ended up saving us time and my sanity. I would never have been able to make almost 200 favors!

downtown-nashville-DIY-statement-bouquet

Now that the wedding day is over, is there anything about your planning process you feel you could have done differently?

We were only engaged for 5.5 months and did most of the planning in about 4 months. I only had 2 meltdowns – both times when I felt like my vision wasn’t coming together. If I could go back, I would trust my instincts more and not get bogged down in trying to make things perfect. Some of my favorite laugh-out-loud moments are from things that went wrong – like our communion bread being totally molded when we pulled it out to put it on the platter. (Thankfully we had sandwich buns leftover from lunch that we used in place of the French bread I had bought!)

In one sentence, what words of advice do you have for couples in the midst of their planning?

Think about what is REALLY important and meaningful to you and your fiancé and cut out anything that isn’t in line with your values and desires, whether that’s a first dance or chair sashes.

Jessica and Brett Turn a Large Wedding at The Mill at Lebanon into an Intimate, Timeless Affair

Friday, July 15, 2011

There are plenty of times when a bride is lost in ideas and becomes overwhelmed. But, Jessica and Brett knew that they were inspired by vintage flavors. So, they pegged their theme early on. The Mill at Lebanon offered the atmosphere needed to capture the couple's timeless style. And since Jessica is a photographer herself, she knew how important it was to have all the special moments remembered on film. So they chose Michael Howard Photography to capture every detail of their sassy, chic wedding day.

We especially love this wedding because Jessica is our beloved "bridal model".  If you've been to any Nashville bridal show/fashion show, you've probably seen her rocking the runway.  She's gorgeous and full of life.  In fact, when we saw her wedding featured on Michael Howard's blog, we thought she was modeling.  Turns out it was her real wedding and we couldn't wait to share it with you.

Jessica and Brett were able to create a very intimate ambiance while hosting 300+ guests!  That's not easy to do.  We hope their approach gives you some great ideas, whether your guest count is large or small.

Our style:

We love the vintage feel to things, but I think we have a more classic, timeless style over all.

How did you incorporate that style into your wedding?

Our venue, The Mill at Lebanon really offered the vintage feel that we like so much, so once we had that nailed down it was all about enhancing the space with details. I chose yellow and chocolate as my two main colors and that kept with the vintage feel, but we used it in a more bright, fresh way to brighten things up. We also used a faux fireplace that was at The Mill when I saw it for the first time in December. We decorated it with candles as well as the aisle and kept everything warm and soft for the ceremony. Instead of a guest book we had everyone sign one of our favorite records, Coldplay Parachutes. It kept with the vintage theme & now we have awesome artwork for our home! Instead of doing a unity candle, we did a salt ceremony. This dates back to biblical times when people would use the salt to make a covenant with each other. We combined our individual grains of salt, we each had our own pouch, into one unity vial, symbolizing our united life. Our commitment to one another and to God cannot be broken unless we can separate our salt from our spouses. We also wanted to find a unique way to memorialize our family that had passed without making it super sad , so we used a small branch with butterflies on each branch to represent them.

Why did you choose The Mill?

We were looking for indoor, vintage looking venues that could hold 300+ people. The Mill was referred to us by a fellow bride who had a similar issue, finding a venue that could hold that many people that wasn't a hotel and didn't break the bank. Once I saw the location and knew it met the requirements, we were sold!

What were some things that stood out?

I really loved the feel of The Mill and it's 100 year old history. Also a big plus was that we had several different rooms to choose from, I loved that we could have our ceremony upstairs in the loft to keep things more personal and intimate, and the reception downstairs in the bigger area where we could have all the fun stuff. At that time no one else had done the ceremony and reception the way we had chosen so I thought it was really awesome that you could choose so many different ways to have your wedding so they wouldn't all look the same.

The Mill at Lebanon may seem out there to some brides.  What made it "worth" it for you?

One of the things that really helped me to make up my mind was that they were having a special during Christmas time where you could get two rooms for the price of one. So, we were able to get the upstairs loft and the downstairs area for one great price and that totally made it worth it! Also, hearing all the guests say they loved the wedding and how unique it was made me feel like I had made the right choice. Was it convenient for your guests given it's distance from Nashville: Yes, the distance worked out fine for us. My husband grew up in Mt. Juliet so there were several guests that lived only 20 or so minutes away. For the rest of our guests it was about 30-45 minutes, but since we had the ceremony and reception all in the same place it made things easier on guests who traveled farther away. Also, for our older guests there was an elevator and convenient parking to help with getting them in and out of the wedding with ease.

What was the favorite aspect of your wedding?

Well, my favorite moment was when my mom and grandmother walked me down the aisle to my soon to be husband. It was such a beautiful moment, my mom and grandma had walked and guided me through life and now they were walking me toward one of the biggest decisions of my life so far. Our favorite aspect was taking time to see each other before the wedding, just the two of us for our first look. It was the most personal time we got to spend together until the wedding was over.

Where did you splurge? Where did you save/DIY?

I would say we splurged on our photography/videography and it was so worth it! Since I am a photographer as well, I knew the importance of having someone we trusted to capture our day. Having worked with Michael before, I knew that we were making a good investment. Some of our family thought it was a little expensive at first, but after the wedding when they saw the images they all totally got why it was so important to us and they wouldn't have it any other way. My savings came from working at a bridal shop for 5 years and having an amazing boss that wanted to make sure our wedding day was beautiful! I saved on my dress, tuxes, bridesmaid dresses and accessories. One other thing that we didn't really splurge on but was one of the best investments was our week of wedding planner! Amber with Planit Nashville was amazing! She did everything leading up to the week of the wedding and on the wedding day we didn't have to worry about anything. Her assistant even went and bought my mom shoe inserts when she mentioned that her feet were hurting! We were super impressed by her and very thankful that we made that investment, which wasn't that expensive at all!

Videographer // Michael Howard Video, Andy was the videographer and his team went over and beyond our expectations, we are SO glad that we decided to do video, we will cherish it forever.
Reception musicians // We had our friends play our first dance song, which was "I Have and Always Will" by Dave Barnes, then a DJ (not a company, just an individual who did that on the side) played the rest of the music for the evening.

Now that the wedding day is over, is there anything about your planning process you feel you could have done differently?

There is not much that I would change! I loved our wedding day.  One thing that was more of a headache than it was worth were the wedding programs. We tried to make them ourselves, but made a mistake with the paper that ended up costing us more money in the end. So, I would have just gone without them, most people probably just threw them away after the wedding.
